Based on what F5 chooses a self-ip (floating or not-floating) for backend connections?

Hello all, I have this question since a while now and maybe it is the time to have this answer :) I am going to migrate the box into a new logic and more clear architecture and there is a step during my migration plan where maybe it would save me time.

I did a test by creating a new empty traffic-group (let's call "Traffic-Group-N") and I put on it a VIP object. There is not self-ip on this Traffic-Group-N and I see that the BIG-IP chose a self-ip "traffic-group-local-only" on the same vlan of the backend server.

Based on which criterias the BIG-IP chooses a self-ip for backend connections? I have 29 Self-IPs.

Thank you.

  • Based on which interface/vlan is selected for the egress traffic. The IP on that interface/vlan is selected.

  • The selfIP of the interface with the best route to the backend host will be chosen. Health checks will come from the non-floating selfIP, where SNAT Automap traffic will come from the floating selfIP.
