In cases like this I like to use fiddler (http://www.telerik.com/fiddler) to see what is actually going wrong. Make sure you enable 'HTTPS decryption' within fiddler (Tools > Telerik Fiddler Options > HTTPS > Decrypt HTTPS traffic).
What I've seen from Office and Sharepoint is that it Office is trying to reuse the cookies from IE to get access to sharepoint. When using a non-IE browser, Office can't reuse cookies and sharepoint will return a 401 (authentication required). When this happens Office should display a login window.
