When should I use iControl?

We are delivering a solution and the node need to implement the HA feature. But I got confuse should use iControl. It seems monitor is good enough and what we need is just to build our session server.

So I want to know what's common task iControl is good at.

  • Think of iControl as a way to automate anything you can do from the management GUI without having to launch a browser and type it in by hand. With iControl, you can automate the process of enabling/disabling members withing a pool, creating virtual servers, building monitoring applications to pull statistics from the device,...

It's always best to make use of the features in the product itself if you can so if you are just concerned that your backend server (I'm assuming that is what you are referring to a "node" as) is up and running, a monitor no the BIG-IP will most likely be all you need. But, if there is some logic in your backend server as to whether it should be taken in or out of rotation that a monitor cannot determine (system resources, disk space, database connections, etc...) then you can use iControl from within your backend server to tell the BIG-IP to take it in/out of rotation.

    Hope this helps...
