Sharepoint, F5, and Workflows

We are running moss 2007 with 3 servers (1 dedicated crawling server and 2 web front end's for the end users.) The 2 WFE's are behind an F5 round robin load balancer.

The DNS entry used for our test system is called tsharepoint which load balances the servers tsharepoint01 and tsharepoint02.

We have the alternate access mappings for our public site setup to have tsharepoint point to tsharepoint, and tsharepoint01/02 both point to tsharepoint as well.

The problem were having is that when we use the tsharepoint DNS entry and start a new Approval Workflow, each person on the approval list gets 3 identical emails sent to their inbox.

However, when I remove the alternate access mappings and go directly to tsharepoint01 and start a workflow, I only get one email. This makes me fairly confident that it has somethign to do with F5 but I'm not familiar enough with the settings to make any changes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • If you don't get an answer, you might try checking MS's support site for Sharepoint, the F5 - MOSS deployment guides or collect more info on the failure.

You can use a browser plugin like HttpFox for Firefox or Fiddler for IE to see which request(s) triggers the email and get more detail on whether multiple requests are being submitted. You might try adding an HTTP header logging iRule to the virtual server (LogHttpHeaders Click here) and check the server access logs to try to collect more detail on the symptoms of the issue.
