replacement node won't join cluster anymore

Our setup is two F5 1600 version: 11.4.0 HF3

One node broke down and is replaced by another one. So I did a reinstall of the OS version 11.4.0 HF3 and recreated all network related objects, like interfaces/VLANS/Routes etc. Then I deleted all old HA/Device group information on the old node and recreated them on the old as well on the new node. After I take the new node from "Release Off-line" mode and force it to standby it immediately becomes active for some reason and interferes with the original master node. As a result we lost our internet connection. When I put one internal interface on disabled and back on enabled again the connection is restored. But we can't proceed like this. What could be preventing the replacement node from joining the cluster?

Thx in adv

  • What could be preventing the replacement node from joining the cluster?

have you checked /var/log/ltm on both units? it should have some clues there.

  • Yes, we sure did. And according the strange messages within the logs we've decided to make a new install on the master node and setup HA again. At this moment Failover and sync is stable again. However, the master node has also a LLC module. Somehow we can't get the LLC config on the replacement node. We even tried to recreate all settings from scratch, but there's a bug preventing us to make a selection of a VS. Therefore we tried to pull the settings from the master node with the "gtm_add" script. But this fails at some stage on a SSL cert failure. Then we tried to import the certs on both nodes but without an success this far.. I think we're going to create a case with F5 next business day.

  • At some stage, after several syncs we were able to manually create the Wide ip's again and the selection of a Virtual server from the list was possible. the gtm_add function still doesn't work therefore we dropped a case with F5.
