replacing hardware on a dead BigIP 3600 and how it effects licensing

so we have a bad bigip 3600 unit and i am considering buying a used one from ebay that comes with no HDD (and therefore no software).

can i move my HDD into the new unit and retain my software license?

since i'm out of main contract at F5 (long ago) they reply to all emails with "Without a valid support contract, we are unable to assist you with your question at this time."

  • No, the license is tied to the serial number of the specific device so that won't work.

  • Time to brush up on your surface mount desoldering/soldering skills if you can figure out which chip (bios??) the serial number is stored on ;D

  • I don't even know if it is surface mount, but suspect it probably is. I'd love to see a pic of the board if you take it apart. If by some chance you do pursue this, a good shop with the right equipment for surface mount work should be able to do it for ~$100. At least the last time I had to get some surface mount work done, that is what it cost. Through hole I do myself. Hakko 808 FTW!
