Are you using SNAT and/or is the node using the F5 as its default gateway?

There shouldn't be, but it depends on the architecture and configuration.

  • We are using snat. There is a l3 switch that has an svi with x.x.x.2 and there are two self ips x.x.x.3 and .4 .3 is traffic-group-1 .4 is traffic-group-local-only

When the curl is executed it goes to .3 Is this correct?

[CURL] Error while making request: Failed to connect to dns.example.com port 80: Connection timed out (error code: 7)'

If snat is configured with automap, it should use the floating IP address, .3. Try running tcpdump on the LTM to see if it gets a SYN from the server from which you are testing.
