F5 LTM version

I wonder if most of the community are on LTM version 11 now, or version 10 are still been widely used. We're running version 10.2.4 which seems very stable and will be supported for almost two more years.

We have our DNS(not GTM) and Mail system on LTM and stability is important, but just want to check if we are the only few ones that still running the old version 10, if upgrade, seems like 11.4.1 is the version to go?

Thanks!

  • Hi there,

I'm supporting lot of customers still with version 10.X and they are happy. Moving slowly to 11.X, but I guess another year will pass without much progress... All new deployments with 11.X, of course.

  • "If it ain't broke..." applies! We've had far better stability and support by finding the software 'sweet spot' and staying put but following HotFixes that can't be remediated manually. For us that's 11.2.1 - now with extended development and support until the end of 2017 and 2018, respectively.

From sol5903 it looks like 10.* technical support ends next year.

  • Hi Hummingbird,

according to the BIG-IP Software Support Policy F5 will support v10.2.4 with software development till end of this year. End of tech support is currently set to end of 2016. I fully agree, it´s a pretty stable software and as long you do not require support for new SSL ciphers there is no immediate need to upgrade.

For an upgrade your H/W platform needs to be supported by the TMOS v11 version you want to migrate to. Please check the release notes for details. Further your systems need to be under service.

When migrating to v11 you need to be prepared primarily for major changes in the device clustering, new SSL ciphers, policy rules replacing http-classes, new iRule syntax for global static variables and class commands.

During the last two years I supported a lot clients migrating from v9/v10 to v11.

When keeping especially the aspects mentioned above in mind and when having a good plan for fallback everything should go well. At least I never had to pull the rollback plan.

Before migrating to v11 you should consider to import your configuration to a redundant implementation of BIG-IP LTM VE Lab Edition to get familiar with the new HA concept and to test your applications.

    Thanks, Stephan
