Solarwinds Monitoring of F5

Hello All We are looking to do solarwinds monitoring of F5 devices. We have enabled Sflow and SNMP monitoring. We can see few devices are discovered by NPM discovery but are not sending data through SFLOw.

Ques 1--What IP address(management or self ip) to be used for adding /discovering in NPM. Ques2--As beginning v11.4 sflow is sent through self IPs do we need to separately add the F5 self ip in Netflow configuration of solrwinds. Or does it auto disvoer?

My main concern is that what IP address to be added in Solarwinds to discover the deivce and get proper Sflow.

  • As far as the BIG-IP is concerned, you can monitor either the mgmt IP or the selfIP. It will respond on either interface. If you do a selfIP, make sure you set your port lockdown settings appropriately to allow the inbound SNMP requests. Also, make sure you set up the SNMP allow lists in the SNMP settings. I'm not familiar with Solarwinds, but if devices need to be defined in Solarwinds to allow sFlow in, then you'll want to use the non-floating selfip of BIG-IP

  • Did the sflow work for you at all please? I saw in the solarwinds forum that sflow is not supported, but that was in 2014, I cant see issue with F5 config. I can see the F5 devices and the CPU util etc, but I cant seem to find the sflow data. Thanks much!
  • yes it did. The SFLOW use Self IP and management IP after version 11.4. in Version 11.3 it just used the management.

  • In BIG-IP releases since 11.4, sFlow sample and telemetry traffic is sent out from a TMM port, not from the management port.
