How to add new GTM to existing synchronization group running older software version

I have a new GTM running 11.5.3 and two older ones running 10.2.3. I'm trying to add the new GTM to the existing synchronization group, however I keep getting this error:

iQuery connection to xx.xx.xx.xx (public IP) failed.

Is big3d running?

Is tcp port 4353 access allowed?

I have confirmed access through the firewalls in both directions. I have looked up big3d, but I haven't found much information about that.

Also, I have found two pieces of documentation that say opposite things about running different software versions in the same synchronization group:

you can

you can't

Is there any way to do this so I don't have to manually copy over the zone files and such to the new GTM?

  • The second article is a little misleading. It will not work out of the box with different software versions, but it should add - Yes it's possible. You'll need to ensure the big3d daemons match, ie install the latest big3d daemon on the older units.

Check this article out, it should clarify things for you:

You can then install big3d on the older systems with big3d_install

read about big3d_install and other related sync group scripts here:

Austin, thanks for the articles. I read through them and was able to update the big3d daemons on the older GTM's so that they now match that of the new one. I also ran through the various checks laid out in the articles to make sure everything else looks good. At the moment, all three GTM's show up as available in their respective data center and server lists, however I'm still unable to get gtm_add to work. I've checked the logs and don't see much there to indicate why it's still failing. I'll keep working on it.

How'd you make out bud? Is your iquery communication good between the devices? You can use "iqdump" from the cli to ensure communication is good there. If you post the relative /var/log/ltm & /var/log/gtm output after you run gtm_add I can take a look. What error do you receive after you run the gtm_add script?
