External and internal exchange 2013 clients without APM

We have two pairs of 3900 LTMs, one for external sites and the other for internal sites. We have the ASM module on the external pair, but not APM. We plan to load balance the CAS servers off of the internal pair so my question is if there is a way to proxy the external exchange clients from the external LTM pair to the internal LTM pair without using APM? Looks like we could do split dns and allow our internal clients to hit the internal LTMs directly, but we're not fans of bringing the external client traffic all the way in.

If not, can ASM and APM exist on the same LTM?

Thanks,

Rob

  • To the last question, ASM and APM CAN exist on the same LTM and actually play very nicely together (think chocolate and peanut butter). ;)

As for proxying from an external LTM to an internal APM, also yes. It'd actually be much more difficult if you had APM on both as they'd generally compete. So simply set the internal APM VIP as a pool on the external LTM and route the traffic that way.

    Hi Kevin,

Thanks for the quick response! Just want to verify, you're saying I need the APM on the external or internal LTMs? Currently, we don't have APM at all.

    Thanks,

  • Ahh, well APM would be a most excellent enhancement for Exchange, but is not expressly required. If you did have it, it'd need to be on the internal LTM.
