ping source address

Hi All,

I thought that all management traffic like ping, traceroute or telnet from ltm to any host usually takes management IP address. But yesterday for one issue I found out when doing telnet to server it was taking self IP address of ltm.

Please suggest which IP address will be used while trying to ping, traceroute or telnet?

Thanks.

  • I think it depends on the VLAN/interface from which the traffic exits the F5. The Self IP address associated with that VLAN/interface will be used as the source IP.

  • the routing table determines where you go, also for your cli commands, and with that which interface you use. the routing table can be influenced by management routes to send traffic via the mgmt interface. so perhaps you were just contacting servers routed via the mgmt interface.
